WoW Forever vs Classic: What Changed and Which to Play

Updated 2026-09-14 · 16 min read · by LFCarry PRO team

World of Warcraft: Forever As of September 13, 2026, World of Warcraft: Forever is a separate Year-1 Classic+ product announced at BlizzCon on September 12 — not a patch on Classic Era, Classic Anniversary, or Retail Midnight. You pick a ruleset, not a realm. This page states what Blizzard has published, leaves unpublished cells as not published, and ends with who should play which.

WoW Forever vs Classic: What Changed and Which to Play

The short answer: a new Year-1 game, not a Classic patch

Nov 4Launch 15:00 PST
Cap 60Year-1 time bubble
Dec 9First raids, not launch week

World of Warcraft: Forever is the Classic+ title Blizzard announced at the BlizzCon 2026 opening / What’s Next panel on Saturday, September 12. The Deep Dive panel ran Sunday, September 13 at 10:00 PDT. Global launch is 4 November 2026 at 15:00 PST for every region named on the shop.

A lede in Blizzard’s Carve a New Path article also printed “3:00 p.m. PDT,” but later copy and Battle.net legal footnotes use PST. November 4, 2026 falls after US daylight-saving ends, so PST is the clock to use.

Access at launch is a normal WoW Subscription / Game Time. Packs are optional upgrades, not the ticket into the game. The setting is a Year-1 time bubble: after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom, before Molten Core, with the level cap at 60 for the foreseeable future. There is no flying and no level scaling (What’s Next). Blizzard has not published a Forever XP curve, dual spec, dungeon finder, or a named realm list.

Related pages: the WoW Forever hub, the dated release-date guide, and the beta dates and cap-30 notes. If you are comparing classes rather than products, use WoW Forever classes. If you want the 1–60 route, use WoW Forever leveling.

There is no realm list — you pick a ruleset

Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap is explicit: Forever is Realmless realmless. You pick a ruleset, not a named server. Official wording is a “large ecosystem,” not “one giant realm for everyone” and not “mega-realm.” Blizzard has not published a realm list or a realm count. Search queries that ask for “WoW Forever servers” or “WoW Forever realms” are asking a question the product does not answer with names.

Rulesets at or after launch:

  • Normal — cooperation; world PvP needs mutual consent.
  • PvP — contested-territory world PvP. Faction-balance systems are described as similar to Season of Discovery.
  • Roleplaying.
  • Hardcore Hardcore — after launch; a fully enclosed ecosystem. Press roadmap recaps of the on-stage slide say “sometime between 2026 and 2027.” Blizzard has not published a calendar day.

There is no cross-ruleset grouping. Factions stay separate: no Horde/Alliance groups. Hardcore death lets that character transfer out to another ruleset, including PvP. Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across rulesets except Hardcore: progress can leave Hardcore; nothing flows into it. Character names are two-part (first + last), unique per region (example given: “Ana Forever”). Language preference matching is published. Shop available regions: Americas & Oceania, Europe, Korea, Taiwan.

Paid character transfers, clones, and paid name changes are not published beyond pack Early Name Reservation (up to 3 characters, 27 October through 3 November 2026 PST, pack required) and the free Hardcore-death ruleset transfer. A WoW Token sold inside Forever is also not published — the word Token does not appear in the Forever news or shop copy. Gold and items importing from Classic or modern WoW are not stated; the pitch is a clean start at level 1.

Year-1 time bubble: after Forsaken Kingdom, before Molten Core

Forever is not “current Classic, plus a zone.” Official copy places it after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, and calls that a Year-1 time bubble with a level-60 cap “for the foreseeable future” (Carve a New Path, Found Photos, plus Polygon / PC Gamer briefing recaps). That is the product difference versus Classic Era / Anniversary (which sit on their own Classic timelines) and versus Retail Midnight (the live modern expansion named in pack housing copy).

Launch content that is named, not guessed:

  • Four named playable additions: Zephras Isle Zephras Isle (levels 1–12, Skyborne starting experience, pack-gated), Riverglades (mid-30s to mid-40s), Shen’dralas (level range not published), and Mount Hyjal (Wowhead: level 60). Treat those as four named regions, not three (What’s Next + Found Photos).
  • More than a thousand new quests across 1–60 (What’s Next + shop).
  • Nine new dungeons (names in What’s Next; press level bands, with two conflicts, live on the leveling guide).
  • First raids on 9 December 2026 — not launch week. Official written What’s Next names Barrow Deeps Barrow Deeps (10) and Hyjal Summit Hyjal Summit (20). Onyxia’s Lair (40) is on the on-stage roadmap per Wowhead’s BlizzCon coverage, Icy Veins, and Blizzard Watch, and is omitted from the official written What’s Next. Sell or plan Onyxia as roadmap-announced, not as a named official-article raid. Boss counts, attunes, and lockouts are not published.

Spring 2027 and Summer 2027 beats (two new raids, more dungeons, a revamped iconic raid, profession + Legacy updates) come from on-stage roadmap coverage, not yet in Blizzard's written articles. Treat those as on-stage roadmap, not as dated live patches.

Systems Classic players will feel: camping, Legacy, riding, talents, loot

These are the published systems that are not “Vanilla 1.12 with extra zones.” All of them are from the Deep Dive recap unless noted.

Camping. Official Deep Dive: Cooking Fire becomes a Basic Campfire system — not a tenth profession (Wowhead’s BlizzCon coverage called it “a new profession”). Sit at it for vendors, repairs, a profession workspace, and one-hour buffs. Up to three contributed objects (Cook can raise that to 5 or 10). Objects come from skill 20 and from dungeon Blueprint drops. Camp buffs do not stack with the matching class buff.

Legacy Points. Account-wide points from challenges (level a class, skill milestones, explore, PvP ranks, reputations, dungeons/raids). Spent per character in three trees: Professions / Adventure / Resourcefulness. Launch spend cap 16 points per character; you can earn up to 65 toward a cosmetic reward track (example given: Spectral Bear Cub). Named examples: Well Rested, Bountiful Harvest, Reagent Economy. Hardcore is isolated from the inbound flow.

Mount Riding. Burning Crusade-style: the up-front mount gold moves into training; a mount is granted when you learn riding. Pack mounts (Cerulean Prideclaw, Veteran Adventurer’s Loyal Companion) still require that in-game skill. Gold cost at 40 and 60, and whether those remain the unlock levels, are not published. No flying.

Talents Talents and racials. Talent rows match 1.12 count. New milestones at 11 / 16 / 21 / 31 (16 is new). Blessing of Kings, Divine Spirit, and Improved Mark of the Wild are baseline. Every race gets 2 active + 2 passive with a similar offensive budget. Class kits beyond Paladin are not published; see classes.

Itemization and transmog. Dungeon drops were re-examined; unique dungeon boss items are now blue; hundreds of new drops. Combined hit/crit ratings; weapon skill nerfed per item; +heal includes one-third spell damage; press adds Expertise; new situational stats. Combat pacing is described as 10–15 seconds per mob. Transmog is opt-in: Classic Mode auto-off; Uncommon/Rare dungeon appearances go to all eligible looters; epic raid appearances go to the binder only; Poor/Common on loot; plate-to-plate; no high-level appearances until 60 except cosmetics.

Professions. 600+ new recipes. Crafted food: a small XP bonus plus stats. Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses. That is the published profession delta; bank, Auction House, and extra gold sinks are not published.

Input and visuals (What’s Next). Official gamepad / controller support. HD and SD character-model options plus Classic/modern visual presets; Classic animations restored on HD models.

Darkspear Islands is a new 15 vs 15 battleground (control points + Arathi Basin-style flags). Original battlegrounds remain, per BlizzCon coverage. Bracket unpublished.

Comparison table: Forever vs Classic Anniversary vs Retail Midnight

Columns print only facts from Blizzard’s published material (Blizzard News + Battle.net shop + named BlizzCon coverage). A cell that Blizzard hasn't published for that product is not published — including most Anniversary and Midnight systems. Do not read a blank as “same as Vanilla” or “same as Midnight.”

Skyborne Skyborne (Warrior / Hunter / Rogue / Druid; Horde Shaman; Alliance Mage) needs Heroic or higher. Full class notes: WoW Forever classes.

Who should play which (trade-offs, not a pitch)

This is a judgment from published facts, not a ranking of fun. As of September 13, 2026, you cannot move a Classic or Midnight character into Forever; the official pitch is to begin again at 1.

S Play Forever if you want a Year-1 Azeroth that is not locked to 2004 or 2019 itemization: four named new regions, 1000+ new quests, nine new dungeons, 10- and 20-player raids on 9 December, realmless Normal/PvP/RP (Hardcore Hardcore later), no flying, no level scaling, and a Legacy system that pays you to level alts. You accept that dungeon sizes, XP numbers, riding gold, raid boss counts, and a full class-kit dump (except Paladin) are still unpublished. You accept that Zephras Isle Zephras 1–12 is pack-gated. You accept raids are not a launch-week activity.

A Stay on Classic Era or Classic Anniversary if your friends, guild bank, and characters already live there. Forever is a clean-slate product with a different ruleset model. Anniversary dual-spec write-ups and Anniversary boosting forum text do not transfer. If your only question is “will my current Classic toon keep going?” the published answer is that Forever is a new start, not a realm transfer SKU.

B Stay on Retail Midnight if you are mid-season on modern WoW and do not want a second 1–60. The same subscription includes Forever, so the cost of trying it is time, not a second box, unless you want Skyborne / Zephras / beta / name reservation. Collection housing decor for modern WoW is a pack bonus that needs Midnight; it is not a reason to drop Midnight.

C Wait on Hardcore. It is a post-launch ruleset with no day on the calendar. Do not plan a Hardcore launch-week character. When it opens, it is enclosed; death can export the character to Normal/PvP/RP.

LFCarry pre-orders on leveling from $259 (shorter brackets cost less on the same slider), dungeons from $9 / $29 endgame, gold from $19 per 100g, professions from $89, and coaching at $29/hour deliver from 4 November 2026. Raids from $149 on 9 December 2026. Hardcore 1–60 from $349 only when that ruleset opens. Custom order from $10. Blizzard has not published a Forever-specific boosting or Token rule; we’ll add one as soon as Blizzard publishes it.

BlizzCon update (September 13, 2026)

Sunday’s Deep Dive (official recap; Wowhead’s BlizzCon coverage) and What’s Next filled the systems Classic players asked about. Rulesets are Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, and Hardcore Hardcore later — not one giant realm; no cross-ruleset grouping; two-part names unique per region. Official gamepad support. HD and SD models plus Classic/modern visual presets. Transmog is opt-in (Classic Mode auto-off; dungeon Uncommon/Rare appearances to all eligible looters; epic raid appearances to the binder only). Camping is a Cooking Fire → Basic Campfire system with one-hour buffs, not a tenth profession. Legacy Points: spend cap 16, earn up to 65. Riding is Burning Crusade-style: a mount is granted when you learn the skill. Combat: combined hit/crit; +heal includes one-third spell damage; press adds Expertise. Talent milestones 11 / 16 / 21 / 31. New battleground: Darkspear Islands, 15 vs 15. Hardcore death: the character can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP (article wording). @Warcraft’s “join a new one” line is looser — this page uses the article.

FAQ

Forever is a new Year-1 product (launch 4 November 2026, 15:00 PST), not a patch on Classic Era or Anniversary. XP rates, dungeon sizes, and riding gold are not published.
