Wailing Caverns is a dungeon in The Barrens, the Horde leveling zone of Kalimdor. The caves are named after the long wails of their steam vents, and the Druids of the Fang now hold them.

It is tuned for levels 15 to 24. It is also the 1st non-linear dungeon of the game, so a full clear takes a plan.

Here is the way through Wailing Caverns, step by step:

  1. Take the quests. Pick them up in Ratchet, in Thunder Bluff and in the cave above the entrance. The full list is below.
  2. Go in through the cave. The portal sits at the back of a cave system in The Barrens.
  3. Kill the 4 Lords of the Fang. Lady Anacondra, Lord Cobrahn, Lord Pythas and Lord Serpentis each drop a gem for Leaders of the Fang.
  4. Clear Kresh, Skum and Verdan the Everliving. They guard other branches of the caverns.
  5. Start the Naralex event. Once the 4 lords are dead, the Disciple of Naralex at the start of the dungeon offers to wake Naralex. Escort him to the ritual stone.
  6. Kill Mutanus the Devourer. He comes after 2 waves of adds. Loot the Glowing Shard from him to start The Glowing Shard quest.

Where is Wailing Caverns in WoW Forever?

The entrance is a cave in The Barrens. The quest givers Ebru and Nalpak stand in a cave above it.

For the Horde it sits in their own leveling zone, close to the Crossroads.

Alliance characters have a longer trip. The boat from Booty Bay in Stranglethorn Vale to Ratchet on the Barrens coast brings them close.

Inside, the caverns branch in several directions. Clear each branch in turn, then come back to the start for the Naralex escort.

Wailing Caverns bosses and how to beat them

1. Lady Anacondra

Anacondra is usually the 1st Lord of the Fang you meet. She casts Lightning Bolt, Healing Touch and Sleep, and Thorns Aura hurts anyone who hits her in melee.

Interrupt every Sleep cast, since it can land on the tank or the healer.

2. Kresh

Kresh is a giant tortoise with high armor. Physical damage is slow on him, so casters do most of the work.

3. Lord Cobrahn

Cobrahn starts the fight with Deviate Pythons around him. They are normal mobs that die fast, so clear them before you focus Cobrahn.

He casts Druid's Slumber and shifts into Serpent Form during the fight.

4. Deviate Faerie Dragon (rare)

The rare dragon spawns only on some runs. 2 Druids of the Fang stand with it, so crowd-control or kill them before the dragon.

5. Lord Pythas

Pythas brings a Druid of the Fang and a Deviate Shambler. His Thunderclap hits everyone close to him and slows their attacks.

Kill the adds before Pythas and interrupt his Sleep.

6. Skum

Skum casts Chained Bolt, which jumps between players who stand close together. Spread out around him.

7. Lord Serpentis

Serpentis is the last Lord of the Fang. He uses the same spells as the other druids, so interrupt Sleep and the fight is short.

8. Verdan the Everliving

Verdan's Grasping Vines hits everyone close to him. Ranged players stand back, and the healer keeps the tank topped up.

9. Mutanus the Devourer

Mutanus is the boss of the Naralex event. He casts Thundercrack, which stuns nearby players, Terrify and Naralex's Nightmare.

Bring ranged damage and keep the melee players topped up.

Wailing Caverns tips: druids, sleep and the escort

The Druids of the Fang are the dangerous trash. Their Druid's Slumber puts a player to sleep, and it can hit your healer.

Fight 1 druid at a time. Crowd-control the rest of the pack and interrupt every Slumber cast.

Clear the dungeon before you start the Naralex escort. The path to the ritual stone is then empty, and only the event waves remain.

Shadowfang Keep is the next Classic dungeon on the Horde route, for levels 22 to 30. Our Shadowfang Keep guide covers it, and the WoW Forever dungeons guide lists them all.
