What the camping system is (as of September 16, 2026)
Camping is Blizzard's replacement for the Cooking Fire, and it is the biggest new social system in Forever. Your Cooking Fire becomes a Basic Campfire. Placing it creates a campsite: a spot where a group sits down, repairs, sells, crafts and picks up an hour of buffs before moving on. Other players contribute crafted objects from their professions, and those objects are what hand out the buffs.

Two things camping is not. It is not a tenth profession — it hangs off Cooking and the existing nine skills. And it is not a raid-buff replacement: the object buffs are variants of class buffs and do not stack with them. It exists so that a five-man heading into a new dungeon has a reason to stop, sit and talk for a minute first.
From Cooking Fire to campsite: what you actually get
Blizzard's recap lists four things a campsite provides:
- Vendors — buy and sell without walking back to town.
- Repairs — fix gear in the field.
- Profession workspaces — craft where you stand; the Tanning Rack is a workspace required for advanced Leatherworking recipes.
- One-hour buffs — from the objects players place.
The buff rule has a condition most previews skip: you must sit at the campfire and become rested to receive the buffs. Walking through a camp does nothing. That is a deliberate brake — it costs a group a short pause, and the pause is the social moment Blizzard is buying.
How long you must sit is not announced. Icy Veins' guide flags the same gap. Until beta players time it, plan for a pause rather than an instant click.
For a leveler this matters because Forever has no flying and the XP curve to 60 is unchanged (Sun interview via Wowhead, 15 Sep). A camp that repairs and re-buffs between quest hubs saves the town trip that used to eat the session. Combine it with the new ship routes and you spend more of the hour killing things. Full route logic in the leveling guide.
Three campfire tiers: 3, 5 and 10 objects
The campfire itself has tiers, and Cooks own the upgrade path. Blizzard: Cooks learn upgraded Campfires that hold 5 or 10 objects. Icy Veins names the three as Basic, Upgraded and Advanced.
| Campfire | Objects it holds | Who provides it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Campfire | 3 | Anyone — it replaces the Cooking Fire | Blizzard Deep Dive, 13 Sep |
| Upgraded Campfire | 5 | Cooks (recipe learned via Cooking) | Blizzard Deep Dive; tier name Icy Veins |
| Advanced Campfire | 10 | Cooks | Blizzard Deep Dive; tier name Icy Veins |
Read the numbers against the group size. A five-man party can only fill a Basic Campfire with three objects — two people's professions go unused. An Upgraded fire fits the whole party. A ten-object Advanced fire is a 10-player Barrow Deeps raid's pre-pull camp. Cooking stops being the profession you level for a stamina food and becomes the one that decides how much buff a group can carry.
The Cooking skill level at which each upgraded fire is learned is not announced.
Camping objects by profession
Blizzard's rule: each profession has three objects at different skill levels. The first is learned at skill 20 from camping NPCs or trainers; the advanced ones come from Blueprints dropped by dungeon bosses. Blizzard named five example objects. Icy Veins published the full Blacksmithing ladder.
| Profession | Object | Effect / role | Skill | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sharpening Wheel | +Attack Power buff | 20 | Blizzard (effect); Icy Veins (skill) | |
| Blacksmithing | Anvil | Workspace / mid-tier object | 140 | Icy Veins |
| Blacksmithing | Master Forge | Top-tier object | 300 | Icy Veins |
| Tailoring | Faction Banner | +Spirit buff | not announced | Blizzard |
| Herbalism | Incense Candle | +Intellect buff | not announced | Blizzard |
| Alchemy | Alchemy Lab | Workspace | not announced | Blizzard |
| Leatherworking | Tanning Rack | Workspace — required for advanced LW recipes | not announced | Blizzard |
One wording conflict, resolved in Blizzard's favour: Wowhead's live Deep Dive blog wrote the Sharpening Wheel as a Strength buff; Blizzard's written recap says Attack Power. We print Attack Power.
Objects for Enchanting, Engineering, Mining, Skinning, Cooking, Fishing and First Aid are not announced by name. Blizzard's phrasing — each profession has three — implies they exist. Wowhead's liveblog adds that Cooking and Fishing were updated for camping. All 600+ new recipes sit in the wider professions guide.
The rules: one object each, one shared cooldown, Blueprints
Four rules govern who places what:
- One object per player. You bring your profession's object; you cannot fill a Basic Campfire alone with three of your own.
- All objects share a one-hour cooldown. Place your Sharpening Wheel at one camp and it is busy for an hour. Buffs also last an hour, so the two clocks match.
- First object at profession skill 20, taught by camping NPCs or trainers. Skill 20 is a day-one number — every character can carry an object before leaving the starting zone.
- Advanced objects come from Blueprints, recipe drops from dungeon bosses. Blueprints are part of the same itemization pass that made unique dungeon boss items blue quality.
Put together, a group's buff set is decided by who is in it. Five different professions on an Upgraded fire beats five Blacksmiths, because five Sharpening Wheels would fight for one slot's worth of effect and share a cooldown. That is the design pushing groups to diversify professions — and pushing Legacy alts toward the professions your main skipped.
Which dungeon boss drops which Blueprint is not announced. The nine new dungeons run from Hall of Thanes at 13–18 to Shaper's Terrace at 58–60, so expect Blueprint tiers to follow the brackets; that is inference, not a published table.
The buffs: class-buff variants that do not stack
Blizzard is explicit: camping buffs are variants of class buffs and do not stack with them. The Sharpening Wheel is the Attack Power line, the Faction Banner the Spirit line, the Incense Candle the Intellect line.
| Object buff | Class buff it mirrors | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Sharpening Wheel (+Attack Power) | Battle Shout family | A group without a Warrior still gets the AP line from a Blacksmith |
| Faction Banner (+Spirit) | Divine Spirit family | Divine Spirit is baseline for Priests in Forever; the Banner covers groups without one |
| Incense Candle (+Intellect) | Arcane Intellect family | Caster groups without a Mage still get Intellect |
The practical read: camping fills the gap when your group is missing a class, it does not add a layer on top of a full group. A five-man with a Warrior, a Priest and a Mage gains nothing from those three objects — it gains from repairs, vendors and whatever the other professions bring. Exact buff values (how much AP, how much Spirit) are not announced.
Class changes that decide which buffs are already baseline: class changes guide.
What we still do not know
Blizzard has not published, and no datamine has yet shown:
- Rest time — how long you sit before the buffs apply.
- Exact buff values — the AP, Spirit and Intellect numbers.
- Skill levels for every object outside Blacksmithing's 20 / 140 / 300.
- Objects for the other professions — Enchanting, Engineering, Mining, Skinning, Cooking, Fishing, First Aid.
- Cooking skill at which the 5- and 10-object fires are learned.
- Which boss drops which Blueprint.
- Placement rules — indoors, in dungeons, near other camps.
Beta runs 17 September – 21 October 2026 at a level-20 cap rising to 30, so the skill-20 objects and Basic Campfire will be tested first; Blueprint-tier objects from the mid-level dungeons come later. We update this page as numbers land. Hub: /wow-forever; weekend recap: BlizzCon 2026.
How a PRO group will use camping (our read)
Opinion, labelled. Given the published rules, this is how our PROs expect to run camps at launch:
- One Cook per regular group, leveled to the Upgraded fire as soon as the recipe exists, so a five-man never wastes two objects.
- Spread professions across the roster — the object matrix rewards a Blacksmith, a Tailor, an Herbalist, an Alchemist and a Leatherworker more than five of anything.
- Camp at the dungeon door, not in town: repairs and vendors are there, the buff hour covers the run, and the Tanning Rack lets the Leatherworker craft the drop-in upgrade on the spot.
- Farm Blueprints early — the first group with a top-tier object in a bracket sets the buff standard for pugs in that bracket.
The profession you pick at character creation now has a group-utility consequence from skill 20 onward. If you want that profession at 20 on day one and at 300 for the Blueprint tier, Profession Leveling 1–300 is $89, pre-order, delivery from 4 November 2026. If you would rather your character reach the dungeon brackets first, 1–60 Leveling is from $259.

Why Blizzard built it: the social intent
Blizzard's What's Next panel named four pillars, and one of them is protect social experiences. Camping is that pillar as a mechanic. You cannot fill a campfire alone, you must sit to benefit, and the objects reward bringing different professions — so a camp is a reason for strangers to stop at the same spot.
The community read matched. @N_Tys26 posted a video explainer on 13 Sep: the system gives you access to trade tools and buffs that are usually exclusive to certain classes, and was created to promote social interaction out in the world. That is the same sentence as Blizzard's, from a player's keyboard, and it is the quote card at the bottom of this page.
For a realmless game this matters more than it did on a 2019 realm. On Forever's rulesets you share a large ecosystem rather than a named server, so recurring faces are something the game has to manufacture. A campfire outside the Excavation Site in the Wetlands is where it manufactures them.
