The short answer
Forever is a new game built on the Classic world, and it is included in the subscription you already pay. Classic Era and Classic Anniversary keep running as they are. Nothing on your Classic characters changes, and nothing carries over. Blizzard has not announced character transfers into Forever, so everyone starts at level 1.
The 4 columns are the 4 chapters below. What stayed is just as important: the same continents, the same 9 classes, the same slow combat, no flying and no level scaling. Blizzard calls the art style timeless and left the game art alone.

WoW Forever Power Leveling & Gearing
Same Azeroth, a new chapter

Classic replays the year 2004. Forever starts a new story in the same place. The clock stands right after Warcraft III: the
Forsaken hold Lordaeron, the
night elves have just lost their immortality, and the classic
raids you remember have not opened yet. Blizzard plans those as revamped iconic raids in later updates.
The map grows. The
Riverglades is a new zone for the mid 30s to the mid 40s, and
Hyjal is a
level 60 zone. Shen’dralas opens between
Mulgore and
Desolace, and the Skyborne start on Zephras Isle.
Wetlands and Desolace get new
quests. Ships now sail Stormwind to Auberdine, Menethil to Southshore and Auberdine, and
Tanaris to the Riverglades.
The old zones stay the same shapes under a new lighting pass. You can switch it off with the Classic preset. Graphics guide.
Realms become rulesets
Classic sold you a realm name. Forever asks 1 question instead: how do you want to play? You pick Normal, PvP or Roleplaying at launch, and
Hardcore arrives after launch. Blizzard has not dated Hardcore yet.
The walls are the same as on a realm. You group, run
dungeons and
raid only with players on your ruleset, and
Alliance and
Horde stay separate. Collections and Legacy Points are shared across your rulesets, except that nothing flows into Hardcore. A dead Hardcore character can move to another ruleset, including PvP.
2 smaller changes follow. Character names have 2 parts, like Ana Forever, and are unique per region. You also set a language preference and meet players who share it. Realmless guide.
On the PvP ruleset you create characters for 1 faction only. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore keep both factions open. Blizzard has no plans for a WoW Token or a paid character boost.
Leveling: same curve, new route
The XP needed for each level is unchanged from Classic. What changed is where the XP comes from. Dungeon mob XP is reduced and the XP for a
dungeon’s
quests on the 1st run is raised, so chain-running 1 instance no longer pays. 1,000+ new quests carry the route instead, and the 9 new dungeons fill the brackets that were thin in Classic.
On Classic a strong player reaches 60 in 100 to 150 hours. On Forever the working figure for a quest-led route is about 150 hours of play. The Legacy perk Well Rested raises your rested XP, crafted food adds a small XP bonus, and a
campfire buff at the start of a session helps too. Blizzard has named no dungeon finder for Forever, so groups form in the world and in chat.
Your
mount arrives with the riding skill instead of a separate purchase. Blizzard has not published the
gold cost. The full route by bracket is in the leveling speed guide.
If you already have a 60 on Classic, the curve is familiar and the character is new. Your Forever main starts at level 1, so the 150 hours begin again.

The subscription already covers Forever, so the time on this calendar is what switching from Classic costs.
Combat and gear: the game is unsolved
Blizzard kept the pace of Classic combat: a solo player needs about 15 seconds to kill an ordinary mob, and crowd control and threat still decide a
dungeon. Inside that frame every class is reworked. Blizzard has detailed the
Paladin so far: Holy Strike at level 6, Consecration baseline at 20 and a Protection seal whose Judgement taunts.
Stats changed too. Hit is 1 stat for melee, ranged and spells, and so is crit. Weapon skill on items is reduced. Bonus healing now includes a share of bonus damage. Unique dungeon boss items are blue, hundreds of new drops exist, and tier sets are new for every class.
Talent trees keep 3 trees and 7 rows, add a 16-point milestone next to 11, 21 and 31, and make Blessing of Kings, Divine Spirit and Improved Mark of the Wild baseline. 6 new race and class combos join the roster:
Gnome
Priest,
Human
Hunter,
Dwarf
Shaman,
Orc
Mage,
Troll
Warlock and
Undead
Paladin. Class changes · Classes.
Systems Classic never had

Camping. Camping turns the Cooking Fire into a roadside campsite with vendors, repairs and profession benches. Other players craft up to 3 objects at it, and everyone who sits down gets a 1-hour buff. Camping guide.
Legacy. Account-wide Legacy Points from challenges, spent per character in 3 trees. Each character spends up to 16 points at launch, and the account can earn up to 65. Legacy guide.
Transmog and models. Transmog exists and is opt-in. The Classic preset turns it off, and epic
raid looks unlock only for the player who loots them. Character models come in HD or SD, and the HD models use the restored Classic animations. Gamepads are supported officially.
PvP. Darkspear Islands is a new 15 versus 15
battleground, and the PvP ruleset gets faction-balance systems. PvP guide.
Dual spec. Blizzard has not announced dual spec for Forever so far, so every build plan assumes 1 set of 51 talent points. What is published is in the WoW Forever dual spec guide.
Access: 1 subscription plays both
The subscription that runs your Classic character also runs Forever. You can play both. The Heroic Pack ($29.99) adds the Skyborne race with its
Zephras Isle start. The Epic Pack ($59.99) adds beta access and 30 days of Game Time. The Collection ($79.99) adds Warcraft III: Reforged on top. Early Name Reservation runs from 27 October to 3 November with any pack. Editions guide.
What Forever does not sell: a WoW Token or a paid level boost. Everyone levels from 1.
Who should play which
Play Forever if you want a Classic-era world that keeps growing: new zones, 9 new
dungeons,
raids from 9 December, reworked classes and a Legacy system that pays you to level alts. You accept a fresh start at level 1.
Stay on Classic Era or Anniversary if your guild, your bank and your characters live there and you do not want a 2nd 1 to 60. Nothing moves over, and nothing there changes.
Keep Retail if you are mid-season on modern WoW. Forever costs you no extra subscription, so trying it costs time only.
Wait for
Hardcore if that is your ruleset. It opens after launch, without a date yet. A
level 60 on a Normal or PvP ruleset by 9 December is bookable today.
On LFCarry the Forever pre-orders deliver from 4 November: dungeons from $12 a run, gold from $49 per 100, professions from $58, coaching at $29 an hour. Raid spots run from 9 December, and the Hardcore 1 to 60 from $349 waits for the ruleset. Every pre-order is refunded in full before the 1st session.
Reserve a raid spot →Barrow Deeps $419, Hyjal Summit $439, Onyxia's Lair $299. Full clear with our group, self-play or piloted. Full refund before the 1st session.
