Highest rank in Fortnite: Unreal

Unreal is the highest rank in Fortnite. It held 1.7% of ranked Battle Royale and Zero Build players in September 2026. Once you reach Unreal, you keep it until the next rank reset. Unreal also puts you on the Unreal leaderboard.

Unreal Legends is the status above it, added in Chapter 7 Season 3. You need all 3 of these in 1 Ranked season: reach Unreal, hold 2,500 or more Skill Rating, and place in the top 500 of the Unreal leaderboard. Miss any of the 3 and the status goes away. You keep the Unreal rank itself.

How Fortnite ranked works: modes, progress and resets

Fortnite Ranked runs in 4 modes with 2 ranks between them. Your rank in each mode starts from your Skill Rating and moves with every match.

  • Shared ranks: Battle Royale and Zero Build have shared 1 rank since Chapter 7 Season 2 in March 2026. Reload and Reload Zero Build have shared their own rank since April 2026.
  • Progress per match: placement, eliminations, the skill of the players you face, damage dealt against damage taken, and the storm circle you reach all count. Late-game play counts more.
  • Storm circles: the circle you reach often counts more than your exact placement.
  • Top 30% bonus: in Battle Royale and Zero Build, a top 30% finish earns more progress. The top 5% get a big bonus. The bottom 40% lose slightly more.
  • Reload: Reload needs more progress to reach Unreal. A Reload elimination costs you less progress.
  • Loss protection: your 1st match each day in each Ranked mode will not drop your rank.
  • Rank reset: ranks reset between Ranked seasons. You keep your Skill Rating through the reset, and matchmaking uses it to place you.
  • Removed modes: Ballistic left Fortnite on 16 April 2026, and Rocket Racing closed in October 2026. Their ranked ladders went with them.

How to unlock ranked in Fortnite

A brand-new Fortnite account unlocks Ranked with a Kickstart quest. The quest asks you to outlast 500 players. Older accounts can queue Ranked right away.

To start, pick Battle Royale, Zero Build or Reload. Turn on the Ranked toggle above the Play button, then choose your queue.

Fortnite season end date and the next season

Chapter 7 Season 4, called Override, started on 20 August 2026. It ends on 1 November 2026.

The next season is the Treasure Hunters mini-season. It starts on 1 November 2026, after the update downtime. Treasure Hunters is still part of Chapter 7.

Chapter 7 end eventSaturday 5 December 2026
Chapter 8 start dateNot announced yet

Epic has not announced a change to the 8 tiers or to the 4 ranked modes for Treasure Hunters.

The Axe of Unreal has been a progressive reward since Chapter 7 Season 3. Reaching Unreal grants the axe, and reaching Unreal again the next season unlocks its next tier. Battle Royale and Reload each have their own axe.

How to rank up in Fortnite

  1. Play for the late circles. The storm circle you reach often counts more than your exact placement.
  2. Aim for the top 30%. In Battle Royale and Zero Build, a top 30% finish earns more, and the top 5% earns a big bonus.
  3. Take your fights late. Late-game eliminations count more than early ones.
  4. Use your daily loss protection. Your 1st match each day in each Ranked mode will not drop you, so play your boldest game then.
  5. Climb in your best mode. Battle Royale and Zero Build share 1 rank, so pick the mode you win more in.

Stuck in 1 division? A Fortnite rank boost takes your account to the rank you pick. Fortnite coaching with a PRO works on your rotations and your end games. A Fortnite wins boost adds Victory Royales to your account. Reload players can take a Fortnite Reload rank boost.
