How ranked works in Overwatch 2

  • 3 ranks in Role Queue. Tank, Damage and Support each carry their own rank. Open Queue has a separate rank of its own.
  • Updates after every match. A bar shows your progress toward the next division.
  • Modifiers. A line under the bar shows what moved your progress, such as a win streak.
  • Placements. The reset on 10 February 2026 put every role through 10 placement matches.
  • Competitive Points. A win pays 10 points and a draw pays 5.

Season 5 and the Emerald rank

Season 5: A Grim Doctrine started on 6 October 2026. It runs on the 9-tier ladder that Season 4 introduced.

Emerald arrived with Season 4 on 11 August 2026. It sits between Platinum and Diamond. Most players were in Gold and Platinum. The new tier went into the middle of the ladder.

The update redistributed ranks. Most moves took Platinum and Diamond players into Emerald. The top Champion divisions became harder to reach.

Season 5 changed Top 500 on day 1. The board now sorts by rank, and the Heat Bonus is removed. Challenger Score only decides who makes the 500.

How to climb the Overwatch ladder

  1. Pick 1 role. Each role climbs on its own rank. Put your hours into 1 of them.
  2. Keep 2 or 3 heroes per role. A small pool covers you when a teammate takes your main.
  3. Read the modifier line. It explains each change in your rank progress.
  4. Check where you stand. The Rank Distribution Indicator compares your rank with your whole queue.
  5. Short on time? A PRO can play ranked wins or your placement matches.
