Is Destiny 2 Free? What Is Free and What You Pay For

Yes. Destiny 2 went free to play on October 1, 2019, when the New Light update opened the base game to every player. The download costs nothing on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, the previous Xbox generation, Steam, Epic Games Store and Microsoft Store.

A free account plays all 3 classes (Titan, Hunter and Warlock), every destination, the New Light questline and 2 full expansion campaigns: Shadowkeep and Beyond Light. Both campaigns joined the free tier on June 4, 2024, the day The Final Shape launched.

Money buys the newer campaigns and the activities tied to them: 5 expansions, 4 packs, Dungeon Keys, premium Rewards Pass tracks and Silver. The table below splits free from paid, row by row.

Paid content comes in 5 groups.

• Expansions: The Witch Queen, Lightfall, The Final Shape, The Edge of Fate and Renegades. Each unlocks its full campaign plus the raids, exotic missions and activities that came with it.
• Packs: Forsaken, Shadowkeep, Beyond Light and the 30th Anniversary Pack.
• Dungeon Keys: 8 dungeons need a key. They are Pit of Heresy, Grasp of Avarice, Duality, Spire of the Watcher, Ghosts of the Deep, Warlord's Ruin, Vesper's Host and Sundered Doctrine. Keys come with The Collection or from Eververse.
• Rewards Passes: every pass has a free track and a premium track. The premium track comes with The Edge of Fate, Renegades or The Collection, or from Eververse.
• Silver: the premium currency, sold in bundles in each platform store. It buys Eververse items, Rewards Pass ranks and Archived Passes.

The Collection bundles the paid content in 1 purchase: the 5 expansions in Standard Edition, the 4 packs, 4 Rewards Passes and every Dungeon Key. Each part is also sold on its own.

The base game is free on every platform. Online play rules differ by console.

This order takes a new Guardian from the download to the free endgame.

2. Play the New Light questline. Every new account starts here.
