The catalyst is 3 chests in Grasp of Avarice
The
Gjallarhorn catalyst comes in 3 pieces. Each piece sits in a hidden chest inside the
Grasp of Avarice dungeon. Either difficulty works.
Each chest opens with an engram from a Reaver Vandal. That is an elite Fallen Vandal with a yellow health bar and a Scorch Cannon. It spawns near its chest.
- Damage the Reaver Vandal. It drops a yellow engram on hit. Leave it alive, since killing it ends the supply.
- Pick up the engram. You gain the Burdened by Riches debuff.
- Reach the chest within 30 seconds. At 0 the debuff kills you.
- Open the chest. The message "You recovered looted fragments" confirms the piece.
Every player opens every chest for themselves. 1 opening does not count for the fireteam. After the 3rd chest, the catalyst is yours, and the dungeon does not need to be finished.
For the rest of the dungeon, see the Destiny 2 dungeon guide.

Where each chest is
Chest 1: the Loot Cave. Drop into the big crystal cavern near the start. You land on the left side, under rusted steel girders. The chest sits on the platform just above those girders. The Reaver Vandal waits across the water with 2 Dreg bodyguards.
Chest 2: the flooded garage. Leave the round room with 4 rolling doors by the stairs, and dodge the rolling barrel on the way up. The Reaver Vandal guards the flooded, ruined garage at the top. Take its engram, climb the boxes into the vent overhead and follow it to the end. You drop into another flooded room by a collapsed column. Turn right. The chest is in a recess on the back wall.
Chest 3: the Sunken Lair. This is the hard chest, just before the final boss. Finish the Fallen shield encounter 1st. The chest sits on top of the round building on the central island. The Reaver Vandal stands on a bridge by the waterfalls, in the outpost at the back corner. The launcher there flies you back to the island.
The 30 seconds run short on chest 3. Leave a teammate at the outpost launcher with a Scorch Cannon. They launch the runner the moment the engram is picked up.

What the catalyst adds: More Wolves
The catalyst gives
Gjallarhorn the
More Wolves perk. In the game's words: it increases magazine size, and final blows with
Wolfpack Rounds spawn a faster, more powerful micro-missile at the target's location.
The base perks stay:
Wolfpack Rounds. Rounds split into tracking micro-missiles on detonation.
Pack Hunter. Handling and reload rise near allies. Firing also grants
Wolfpack Rounds to allies wielding non-exotic rocket launchers.
More magazine means more rockets before a reload in a damage phase. That is the part raid teams care about.
The exotic catalyst list has the next catalyst on your wish list.
How to finish the 400 kills
The catalyst counts targets defeated with
Gjallarhorn. The goal is 400.
- Get the rocket 1st.
Gjallarhorn comes from the exotic quest And Out Fly the Wolves. - Pick rooms with big add waves. Low-difficulty playlist activities fill the counter fastest.
- Let the wolves count. Kills from the micro-missiles are
Gjallarhorn kills.
In a week when
Grasp of Avarice is a featured dungeon, the same run also drops Tier 5 weapons and armor.
