WoW Forever Realmless Guide: Rulesets, Grouping Walls, Names and Hardcore

Updated 2026-09-29 · 8 min read · by LFCarry PRO team

World of Warcraft: Forever has no realm list. On 4 November 2026 you pick a ruleset instead: Normal, PvP or Roleplaying, with Hardcore arriving after launch. This guide explains who you can group with, what travels between rulesets, how names work and which ruleset to pick.

WoW Forever Realmless Guide: Rulesets, Grouping Walls, Names and Hardcore

Rulesets replace realms

Classic asked you to pick a realm name and live with it. Forever asks how you want to play. At character creation you choose a ruleset: Normal, where world PvP needs both players to agree, PvP, where contested zones stay dangerous, or Roleplaying. Hardcore joins the list after launch, and Blizzard has not given it a date.

On the PvP ruleset you can create characters for 1 faction only. Once you make an Alliance character there, Horde is closed on that ruleset, and the reverse is true. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both factions.

Blizzard is clear that this is not 1 giant realm for everyone. Each ruleset is a large ecosystem with room for far more players than a 2004 realm held. The infrastructure is built so you keep running into the same names while you level. Strangers become familiar faces, and a guild mate crosses your path before you ever group.

The design answers 2 old problems at once: launch queues on the popular realm, and the realm that empties by month 4. Blizzard has not published a realm count or a layering scheme, and the plain answer to “which server should I roll on” is now “which ruleset”.

The 4 rules that stay, on 1 card

Decide the ruleset with your friends before launch. A party, a dungeon or a raid never crosses it. The 3 chapters below take the card 1 rule at a time, and the last 2 turn it into a choice.

Who you can group with

You group, run dungeons and raid only with players on your own ruleset. A friend on PvP and you on Normal cannot form a party. Alliance and Horde stay separate on every ruleset, so a Horde friend on your ruleset cannot join you either. The 2 walls are independent, and both are Blizzard’s rules.

Inside your ruleset Blizzard steers who you meet. You set a language preference and are matched with players who share it. On the PvP ruleset Blizzard adds faction-balance systems like the ones from Season of Discovery. The population is pushed toward an even Horde and Alliance split instead of a 70 to 30 realm.

Guild scope, the Auction House and the size of each ecosystem are open questions. Blizzard has not published them yet. How the PvP ruleset plays.

Language preference is set under Options → Languages and Social. The Online Language choice is account-wide and has a 24-hour cooldown before you can change it again.

The walls: factions, rulesets, Hardcore. Think of each ruleset like a mega realm: factions stay separate, groups stay inside 1 ruleset, Hardcore is enclosed and a dead character can transfer out, even to PvP. World of Warcraft · Watch on YouTube ↗

Hardcore: the enclosed ruleset

Hardcore is the 1 ruleset Blizzard fences off. It opens after launch, without a date yet, and it is a fully enclosed ecosystem: you cannot group with Normal, PvP or Roleplaying players, and nothing flows into it.

The exit is open. When a Hardcore character dies, you can transfer it to another ruleset, including PvP, and keep playing it there. Legacy Points and collections earned in Hardcore also count on your other rulesets. Death rules, appeals and the launch window are still to come from Blizzard. Hardcore guide.

Pre-order Hardcore leveling →A pre-order that starts the day Blizzard opens Hardcore. No date yet, so the spot is refundable in full until the 1st session.

Names: 2 parts, unique per region

Character names have 2 parts, and Blizzard’s example is Ana Forever. A name is unique per region instead of per realm, so 2 players in the same region cannot share the full name. That gives you far more original names than a single word on a crowded realm ever did.

Early Name Reservation runs from 27 October to 3 November 2026 and comes with any pack, from the $29.99 Heroic Pack up. You create and customise up to 3 characters. Names go to whoever claims them 1st, and Blizzard does not guarantee yours. A subscription alone plays Forever, so reservation is a pack extra. Name reservation guide.

Normal, PvP or Roleplaying: how to pick

Normal fits a mixed group of friends and anyone leveling in the evenings. You quest without being camped, and you still duel or flag when you want a fight.

PvP fits players who want contested zones to matter. Faction balance is built into the ruleset, so you are less likely to end up on the 30% side. Leveling takes longer when Stranglethorn is a war zone, and that is the point.

Roleplaying is a named ruleset with the Normal rules and an RP community. Pick it for the community, and pick it with your friends. On the day you cannot talk your way across a ruleset wall, so agree on the box before 4 November.

Your Pro shares your ruleset

Realmless ends 1 old service: there is no realm to transfer you onto, and we do not sell it. What still matters is a Pro on your ruleset and your faction, because those are the 2 walls Blizzard printed.

Every Forever order on LFCarry asks for the ruleset at checkout. On the leveling builder the PvP ruleset adds 25% to the price, because a booster on a contested ruleset spends hours on fights and corpse runs. Roleplaying costs the same as Normal. Dungeon runs and raid spots are booked on your ruleset too. Hardcore orders wait for Blizzard to open that ruleset, and every pre-order is refunded in full before the 1st session.

Whichever box you tick, the character on it starts at level 1. The road to 60 is about 150 hours of play.

Normal and Roleplaying share these calendars, and on a PvP ruleset every gank stretches the one you play yourself.
