MW4 YOLO difficulty: the short answer
YOLO is the 6th and hardest Campaign difficulty in Modern Warfare 4. It sits above Realism.
You get 1 life for all 16 missions. A death or a failed objective ends the run and sends you back to Mayhem, the 1st mission.
YOLO unlocks after a Realism completion. Realism itself opens after 1 completion on any difficulty, so YOLO needs 2 full runs before your 1st attempt.
The reward is the YOLO Completer Calling Card. YOLO is playable now in Campaign Early Access, live since 16 October for digital pre-orders. Full launch is 23 October.
How to unlock YOLO in MW4
The 6 Campaign difficulties, easiest to hardest:
- Recruit
- Regular
- Hardened
- Veteran
- Realism
- YOLO
The unlock chain has 3 steps:
- Finish the Campaign on any difficulty. Realism opens.
- Finish the Campaign on Realism. YOLO opens.
- Start YOLO from New Game. Every attempt begins at Mayhem, and Mission Select stays closed for YOLO.
Early Access counts. YOLO is playable in Campaign Early Access, and a player had already finished it there by 20 October.
The Realism run pays off in 2 ways. It opens YOLO and earns the “Was it worth it?” trophy, worth 100 Gamerscore.

YOLO rules: 1 life, no checkpoints, friendly fire on
YOLO plays like Realism with 1 life. Enemies hit at Veteran level, your health is lower and the HUD is reduced.
- 1 life: a death ends the run.
- Failed objective: the run ends the same way.
- Restart: you go back to mission 1, Mayhem.
- Checkpoints: YOLO has no checkpoint recovery.
- Friendly fire: on, and a friendly fire kill counts as a death.
Realism and YOLO side by side:
| Realism | YOLO | |
|---|---|---|
| Unlocks after | Any Campaign completion | A Realism completion |
| Enemies | Veteran level | Veteran level |
| Friendly fire | On | On |
| Mission Select | Replays completed missions | Closed, New Game only |
| Finish reward | “Was it worth it?” trophy | YOLO Completer Calling Card |
MW4 YOLO reward: the YOLO Completer Calling Card
A YOLO finish earns the YOLO Completer Calling Card. It belongs to the Elite Campaign Mastery set, with Veteran Completer and Realism Completer.
The 16 completion rewards unlock on your 1st Campaign run. A YOLO finish adds the YOLO Completer card.
| Completion reward | Where it drops |
|---|---|
| 8 Base Operators: Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West, Park | Missions 1, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 |
| 3 Double XP Tokens | Missions 3, 9 and 15 |
| 2 Double Weapon XP Tokens | Missions 11 and 13 |
| No More Rules Calling Card | Mission 2 |
| Ready Line Loading Screen | Mission 5 |
| Gone Dark Emblem | Mission 7 |
| YOLO Completer Calling Card | A YOLO finish |
The rewards are usable in Multiplayer and DMZ from full launch on 23 October.
No trophy or achievement asks for YOLO. The 18 Campaign trophies top out at Realism, with “Was it worth it?” for a Realism completion. Hold the Line takes a finish on any difficulty.
On PS5 the list holds 8 Gold and 10 Silver trophies, with no Platinum. On Xbox, Hold the Line and “Was it worth it?” give 100 Gamerscore each, and the other 16 give 50 each.

The 16 missions you clear on 1 life
The Campaign runs across the Korean Peninsula, Paris, New York and Mumbai. YOLO asks for all 16 missions in a row, in this order:
- Mayhem
- Out in the Cold
- Following Orders
- Hired Gun
- Losing Ground
- Traffic
- Gone Dark
- Assassins
- Survivors
- Stranded
- Defection
- Counter Attack
- Escape
- Entrenched
- Decapitation
- Greater Good
A death on Greater Good sends you back to Mayhem, the same as a death in mission 1.
How to beat YOLO: practice and tips
Practice every hard fight on Realism before the YOLO run. Completed missions replay from Mission Select on a difficulty you pick, and YOLO is the exception.
A player who beat YOLO in Early Access shared these habits:
- Stay behind cover and let your AI allies take the kills.
- Save flashbangs and grenades for stragglers.
- Expect the duel where Price fights 2 former allies to be among the hardest sections.
- Watch your fire around allies. A friendly fire kill ends the run.
That player took about 20 hours for the winning run and 40 hours over 3 attempts. A normal Campaign run takes about 6 to 8 hours.
A Realism run is a separate full playthrough. Budget it before the YOLO attempts.
The MW4 Campaign guide covers the Campaign length, the Early Access window and the full reward list.
