The rule that decides the whole list
In Year 8 Season 2 (Into the Dark — Ubisoft, 15 June 2026), The Division 2 has 74 exotics: 42 weapons and 32 armor pieces. You still equip one exotic weapon and one exotic armor. A second exotic rifle does not go on. A second exotic backpack does not go on. If a page ranks seventy-four items and never says that, it is a collection guide wearing a tier-list title.
Default pair for most PvE: St. Elmo's Engine + Memento. That is the answer if you asked “what is S right now” and walked away. Everything below is when that pair is the wrong pair.
Ranks on this page use two public lists fetched 25 August 2026: Grindout’s exotic guide (updated 18 August 2026) and Skycoach’s weapon list (updated 8 May 2026). S means both lists put the gun there, or both treat it as the slot’s default. A single-source S is written as A, with the split named. Armor has no second public list in that window — those slots are labeled as Grindout-only.
Pick the pair for the activity
Read this table before the slot lists. It is the part that survives a scroll cliff.

If you already own St. Elmo's and Memento, stop farming random exotic caches. The next hour belongs to a locked piece you cannot target-loot — Eagle Bearer, Ravenous, Ouroboros, or Regulus — or to optimizing the pair you have.
Weapon consensus — S only when both lists agree
Skycoach’s May list is weapons-only and three months older. Where it fights Grindout’s August list, August wins the slot call and the gun is not S here.

Y8S2 also added Caduceus (season track AR) and Steel & Sons (Broken Rain incursion rifle, Ubisoft TUY8S2.3, 10 August 2026). Skycoach’s May list does not rank them. Until a second list does, they are “new, not S.”
Armor slots — one source, so no fake consensus S
Skycoach did not publish an armor ladder in the window we fetched. The slot winners below are Grindout, 18 August 2026. Treat them as a starting pair, not a second independent vote.
- Backpack — Memento (also their overall exotic armor). NinjaBike Messenger Bag if you are buying a brand cheat instead of trophies.
- Mask — Coyote's Mask, with Catharsis and Tinkerer as the other two they still put in that slot’s S.
- Chest — Tardigrade for the team plate. Ridgeway's Pride if you already finished its quest and play melee range.
- Gloves — Overdogs.
- Knees — Nurse's Kneepads (Y8S2 season track). No S in that slot on their list; this is the A they would actually equip.
- Holster — Dodge City Gunslinger's Holster. Same story: no S, this is the A. Quest-gated, then holster targeted loot for duplicates.
If the weapon is St. Elmo's, Capacitor, or Scorpio, take Memento unless the build document names a mask or chest as the exotic. Do not burn the armor exotic slot on Acosta's Kneepads because the name is familiar — Grindout has them in B.
How the locked ones actually drop
Most exotics are Countdown / Summit / open-world targeted loot once you own the blueprint. These are not:
- St. Elmo's Engine, Scorpio, Memento, Coyote's Mask, Pestilence, Chameleon — Countdown with that slot as targeted loot. First Capacitor still wants Summit challenges, then Countdown for copies.
- Eagle Bearer — Dark Hours (and a rare Dark Zone roll). Not Countdown targeted loot. Weekly raid on every character you have.
- The Ravenous — Iron Horse, same Dark Zone footnote as Eagle Bearer. Not targeted loot.
- Regulus — Iron Horse plus its exotic project. Grindout and Skycoach both say you cannot target-loot it later.
- Ouroboros — Paradise Lost only. Grindout writes a 1% boss / 10% weekly-cache figure; we have not independently measured that rate. Plan on weekly characters, not a Countdown filter.
- Vindicator — Descent vendor, 350 NSA Credits. Guaranteed, and both lists keep it off the chase list.
- Nurse's Kneepads / Caduceus — Y8S2 season track. Underboss — Y8S2 manhunt climax, first Master clear.
