Updated 2026-08-25 · 14 min read · by LFCarry PRO team

Return of the Ancients (0.5) + Runes of Aldur launched May 29, 2026. Live patch line is 0.5.4f (GGG notes Aug 12, bugfixes only). August staples: Deadeye — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsIce Shot Deadeye, Martial Artist — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsMartial Artist, Spirit Walker — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsTwister Spirit Walker — plus a playstyle picker and a 0.5.4e → 0.5.4f change log. Mid-league poe.ninja usage still crowns Martial Artist (~20%) / Gemling (~16%) / Spirit Walker (~12%) on the Aug 12 snapshot. Siblings: Duelist (1.0), campaign length.

PoE 2 Builds (August 2026): Best Runes of Aldur Meta by Class

August 2026 Meta Builds — Runes of Aldur (0.5.4f)

Filter by class chips. Tiers are a consensus re-checked Aug 12 of Mobalytics 0.5 starter tier list, Maxroll league-starter list (updated Jul 24, 2026 for 0.5.4 — treat as starter-biased vs mid-league ninja), and mid-league popularity on poe.ninja Runes of Aldur. Where editors disagree by a full tier, we say so in the Why column.

Current League & Patch State

What is live: Runes of Aldur challenge league inside Return of the Ancients (content patch 0.5.0, realms live May 29, 2026).

How long the league has left: GGG has not announced an end date. 0.5 is the final Early Access content patch, so Runes of Aldur runs until 1.0 — which game director Jonathan Rogers said will launch “this year some time after Exilecon” (MMORPG, May 7). ExileCon is November 7-8, 2026 in Auckland — that is the one hard date on the calendar, and the league cannot end before it. Community trackers currently model anywhere from late October to mid-December 2026; they disagree with each other and none of them is GGG. Treat every countdown as a moving estimate: Maxroll's own timer read about a month remaining on Jul 15 and 2 months 15 days on Aug 12. Meanwhile GGG is running official Runes of Aldur race qualifiers on Aug 13, 20 and 27 — a league being wound down does not get a race series.

Patch cadence so far:

  • 0.5.1 (Jun 4) — Atlas passives / lineage support / tree additions (Maxroll notes).
  • 0.5.2 (Jun 11) — Delirium + Runes of Aldur tuning, endgame monster adjustments.
  • 0.5.3 (deployed mid/late Jun per GGG 0.5.3 preview) — endgame investment + risk/reward clarity.
  • 0.5.4 (GGG patch notes, Jun 24) — Atlas Passive Tree for Runes of Aldur, Expedition customisation, level-scaling uniques; early hotfixes Jun 25–28.
  • 0.5.4b (GGG patch notes, Jul 2) + Hotfix 3 (Jul 3) — boss telegraphing, Expedition/Atlas bugfixes, Martial Artist QoL; no Deadeye/Martial Artist/Twister skill nerfs. Jul 13 forum bump = Server Maintenance only.
  • 0.5.4c (GGG patch notes, Jul 16) — one line, Added support for the new Supporter Packs. No gameplay content at all.
  • 0.5.4d (GGG patch notes, Jul 24) — Ritual tribute and Breach resources now carry across on Migrate All from SSF and private leagues. Stash plumbing, no balance.
  • 0.5.4e (GGG patch notes, Jul 29) — shader load times, a Vulkan crash fix and Vsync now defaulting to Locked. Then a client-crash hotfix (Aug 4) and a restart patch (Aug 6, Escape Shot can no longer leave boss arenas).
  • 0.5.4f (GGG patch notes, Aug 12, Stacey_GGG) — the live line as of Aug 25. Bugfixes only: skills targeting the wrong enemy, shapeshift grab lock, dodge-roll after sprint, Charged Staff energy waves, MTX, PlayStation client crash, two instance crashes. No skill-balance nerfs, so the ladder below did not move. GGG has still announced no date and no patch notes for 0.5.5. GGG is at gamescom (Aug 26-30), the likeliest venue for a date.

What that means for builds: bow/projectile and Martial Artist attack loops that looked cracked at league start are still the safe money — but mid-league patches keep nudging Atlas farming and individual skills. Treat any YouTube "day-1 S-tier" from May as stale until you check a Jun/Jul update stamp.

League Starters vs Endgame / Budget vs Premium

League starters (campaign → early maps)

Pick these if you need smooth Acts + first Atlas progression without a mirror:

  • Deadeye — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsIce Shot Deadeye — fastest "I freeze everything" campaign on Mobalytics commentary.
  • Oracle — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsPlant / totem Oracle or Lich — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsEssence Drain Lich — low APM comfort.
  • Witchhunter — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsGrenade Witchhunter — still fine; slower clear than Deadeye for softcore racing.
  • Shaman — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsBear Shaman — tanky early armour, scales with league runes.

Endgame / currency sinks

Once you have divines, the ladder looks different from day-1 tier lists:

  • Martial Artist — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsMartial Artist Hollow Form / Whirling Assault — mid-league popularity king.
  • Spirit Walker — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsTwister Spirit Walker duration/crit stackers — premium clear speed.
  • Gemling Legionnaire — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsGemling Legionnaire — weak starter, strong once alt-quality + gear come online (ninja #2 share vs C-tier start rank).
  • Tactician — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsTactician buff-stacker — boss delete + map clear with investment.

Rule of thumb: start a build that is S/A on both Maxroll and Mobalytics for campaign, then respec or reroll into whatever poe.ninja says is printing currency in week 6+.

Budget vs premium still prices against the Divine Orb rate this league.

How Builds Die to Nerfs (Patch Cadence)

PoE2 Early Access leagues have run five to six months, not four — 0.4 Fate of the Vaal ran Dec 12, 2025 to May 29, 2026 (24 weeks), and GGG said of this one that “normally we would do our next big content release in August, but… our plan is to take a little longer on this one”. 0.5 is the last Early Access league, so there is no 0.6 to cycle into — the next reset is 1.0. Inside a league, expect:

  • Week 1–2: creator tier lists (Mobalytics/Maxroll) dominate — great for starters, noisy for endgame.
  • Week 3–6: balance hotfixes (0.5.1–0.5.3 style) trim outliers and buff dead skills; check patch notes before mirroring a glass-cannon clip.
  • Mid/late league (0.5.4+): Atlas/farming patches change what you farm more than which ascendancy exists — builds die when their clear speed or boss pattern stops paying, not only from direct nerfs.

How to not brick a character:

  1. Prefer ascendancies with multiple skill shells (Martial Artist — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsMartial Artist, Infernalist — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsInfernalist, Spirit Walker — Path of Exile 2 — PoE 2 BuildsSpirit Walker) so a single skill nerf is not a full restart.
  2. Keep a budget rare setup that still maps if your unique spikes get price-fixed.
  3. After every numbered patch, re-check the skill gem + support changes — not just the ascendancy node text.

Which Runes of Aldur build fits how you play

The S-tier row is three different games. This table is the decision, not another popularity recap — pick the row that matches your week, then open the planner linked in Sources.

Gemling is C on Maxroll’s starter list and only S on Mobalytics once alt-quality gems exist — that is a currency problem, not a skill problem.

It is the mid-league popularity king because the shell has more than one skill to fall back on if a single gem gets named.
You want the fastest maps and can pay for itTwister Spirit Walker, or Gemling Twister after the first divine spikeTwister as a league-start on a fresh stashMobalytics S, Maxroll A, ~12% ninja (#3). The ceiling is real; the button count and unique cost are why Maxroll will not call it a day-1 S.
You mostly boss, not juice mapsDeadeye Snipe, Tactician buff-stack, or invested Martial ArtistA clear-speed Twister with no single-target planIce Shot’s Snipe and Tactician’s pin / fullscreen kit are the boss-delete rows on both editorial lists. Twister can boss — it is not the reason people play it.

0.5.4f (Aug 12) did not change this table. It fixed targeting, shapeshift grab, and a handful of crashes. If your build “died” in the last two weeks, it died to the economy or to a clip you copied, not to a numbered nerf.

What 0.5.4f changed — and why the ladder did not move

The page you are replacing in a search result still says 0.5.4e. That was true on July 29. The live numbered line on August 25, 2026 is 0.5.4f, posted by Stacey_GGG on August 12.

  • What shipped: skills hitting the wrong target; being stuck after a shapeshift grab; dodge-roll failing after a sprint; Charged Staff energy waves; MTX display; a PlayStation client crash; two instance crashes.
  • What did not ship: any named nerf or buff to Ice Shot, Whirling Assault, Storm Wave, Twister, or the three S-tier ascendancies. Official notes: forum/view-thread/3996513 (read today). Index of recent notes: PoE2 patch-notes forum.
  • What that means: a mid-league popularity snapshot from Aug 12 (Martial Artist ~20% / Gemling ~16% / Spirit Walker ~12% / Deadeye ~9%) is still the right ladder to quote. 0.5.4f cannot have moved it.
  • 0.5.5: not shipped. July forum posts treated it as a side event league. Until GGG posts notes, treat every “0.5.5 date” as speculation. Gamescom is Aug 26–30.

May 29 → Aug 25 is week 13 of Runes of Aldur, not week 11. The league still has no announced end date; ExileCon (Nov 7–8, 2026) is the one hard calendar fact underneath 1.0.

Rule we will keep using until a numbered patch names one of these skills: start Deadeye if you need the campaign to be kind; roll Martial Artist if you will live in maps; pay for Twister only after you have seen a divine drop. 0.5.4f did not change the rule.

Runes of Aldur, launched with Return of the Ancients (0.5.0) on May 29, 2026 and still the live challenge league — week 13 as of August 25. GGG has announced no end date. Because 0.5 is the final Early Access content patch, the league runs until 1.0, and GGG has only said 1.0 arrives 'this year some time after ExileCon' (Nov 7-8, 2026 in Auckland). The live numbered line is 0.5.4f (Aug 12, bugfixes only). No 0.5.5 has shipped.
