What is D2R Farming?

Farming is the process of doing something repeatedly until the desired result is achieved. When it comes to D2R farm, it’s a huge part of the game, no matter what difficulty or mode you play. So, what do you farm for?

  • BiS items

  • Rare items (on normal difficulty)

  • gems to put them into gear sockets

  • Amulets

  • Rings

  • Runes

The game is constantly getting more punishing, so having the strongest items you can find is very important. But actually looking for them is often extremely tedious because of the item drop chance. Here’s how the game handles the item drop:

  1. When you kill a monster or open a chest, the game’s algorithm generates the reward items with their properties.

  2. Then the game calculates the number of items that will drop.

  3. It selects the types of items.

  4. It selects the quality of items.

  5. Sometimes, it decides on which unique item or set piece to drop.

  6. The item properties are generated.

Each of these decisions has its own rule that determines the exact result. So, it’s not just one universal equation that calculates what loot you get. It’s a combination of several equations. So, based on these rules, let’s give you an example. The overall chance of a unique ring called Dwarf Star to drop from Baal on Normal difficulty is equal to 1 in 1677.

How Hard is It to Farm D2R Items on My Own?

Now that we know how the game handles the D2R loot generation, it’s now the time to talk about how challenging it is to do on different difficulty levels.

  • On Normal - it is practically impossible to find anything valuable. This is why most people try to farm runes by repeatedly fighting the Countess boss in Act 1. In Diablo 2 Resurrected farm runes will be the same, so prepare to make lots of Countess runs. Besides, the chances of her dropping something valuable are higher when it is your first kill, and you have the related quest activated.

  • On Nightmare - is where the majority of farming is done. There are some decent chances to drop valuable from high lvl monsters and bosses loot to help you finish your build.

  • Acts 2-4(Nightmare) - the tombs in Act 2, Lower Kurast in Act 3 are great places to get EXP and good loot. Farming the Council and Mephisto bosses is where you can get your first items strong enough to help you survive on Hell’s difficulty.

  • Act 5 (Nightmare) - is all about those first-time kills of Shenk and Eldrith. Once your reach Baal and the area he inhabits is the only one that drops the loot that is always reserved for the Hell difficulty - Harlequin Crest Shako and the Vex rune.

  • Secret Cow Level - is a great place where you can find lots of Magic quality loot.

Hell difficulty - this is where players repeat will their D2R items farm activities from the previous two difficulty levels as well as add a few new ones.

  • Act 1, The Pits (lvl 85 area)

  • Act 2, Sewers 1, 2, 3 (lvl 74+ area)

  • Act 2, Ancient Tunnels (lvl 85 area)

  • Act 3, chests and Lower Kurast area – (lvl 80)
